St Florian’s Gate

Dedicated to Poland's patron saint, the country's best known Gothic tower is the starting point of the Royal Road of Kraków.

St. Florian’s Gate is one of the last surviving remnants of Kraków’s medieval city walls and a symbol of the city’s historic defenses. Built in the 14th century, it was the main entrance to the Old Town, protecting the Royal Route that led to Wawel Castle. Standing at about 34 meters tall, the gate is made of limestone and brick, topped with a Baroque-style roof added in the 18th century.

Originally part of a larger fortified system, it was connected to a moat, defensive walls, and the Barbican, which still stands nearby. Above the entrance, a stone relief of St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters, overlooks the street. Over the centuries, the gate witnessed royal processions, military parades, and invasions, serving as a key point of defense for the city. Today, it remains an iconic landmark and a passageway into Kraków’s historic center, often bustling with street artists and performers.
