What makes this tour special

Join us for a private walking ghost tour of the Capitol Square. Madison’s rich and spectral-rich history will come alive, as you walk the neighborhood.

Your tour begins at the Wisconsin Capitol Building, which went through three iterations before becoming the building which now stands. In 1904, a tragic fire resulted in the death of several workmen, whose presence is still well documented by building employees. From there, your private guide will take you by one of the city’s most beautiful —and haunted — old theaters, the Majestic, whose specters are so real that one employee approached the figure to let the man know it was time to go home, only to realize the man was an apparition.

Then, against the backdrop of glittering Lake Monona, see Monona Terrace up close, a summer home and retreat designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, who grew up in the state. As you gaze out over the lake, hear stories of the Lake Monona cryptid, Bozho, whose first encounter with unsuspecting canoers took place over 150 years ago. As you move along the lakefront, see where the Old Madison jail stood, and hear tales of inmates being terrified by a specter so alarming that they awoke the sheriff and begged for a different cell. Pass a night club, whose adjoining business was a funeral home, which left more than a few night club workers and band members some fights through the years and finally, your eery tour finishes at the Orpheum Theater, which happens to be the final resting place for several Madison hauntings.

Your private spectral tour is two hours and just under two miles and is suitable for people of all ages, provided that adults are present with children.

What you'll see

Wisconsin State Capitol
Though Madison has served as the capital since the 1830's, the capitol building seen today was designed by Post in 1906 and took 10 years to complete.
The Majestic Theater
Originally serving as a vaudaville theater, the Majestic Theater is one of the city's turn of the century treasures, even with the occasional ghost sightings inside.
Old Madison Jail
Though it now serves as a maximum-security prison, the Old Madison Jail once stood on this same site and housed fewer than 10 prisoners on average.
Monona Terrace
Designed by local Wisconsiner, Frank Lloyd Wright, as a community center, the Monona Terrace project did not get underway until almost 18 years after it was proposed, as WW2 interrupted the project.
The Orpheum
The art deco building built by Rapp & Rapp in 1926 remains one of the city's preeminent concert venues over a century after its construction.
