The Ghosts of Madison: Private 2-hour Spooky Evening Tour

Join us for a private walking ghost tour of Capitol Square and see Madison’s spectral-rich history come to life as you walk the neighbourhood.

On your private ghost tour, you will:

  • Begin your tour at the Capitol Building, where a tragic accident has left more than a few eery stories behind;
  • Visit the Majestic Theatre, where a vaudeville performer continues to appear to unsuspecting guests and employees;
  • See Frank Lloyd Wright’s summer home, Monona Terrace, and try to catch a glimpse of the lake’s mysterious cryptid;
  • Hear stories of figures so terrifying that prison inmates begged the sheriff to move their prison cells and friendly ghosts which have stayed behind in a local hotel.

Your tour begins at the Wisconsin Capitol Building, which went through three iterations before becoming the building which now stands. In 1904, a tragic fire resulted in the death of several workmen, whose presence is still well documented by building employees.
From there, your private guide will take you by one of the city’s most beautiful —and haunted — old theatres, the Majestic, whose spectres are so real that one employee approached the figure to let the man know it was time to go home, only to realise the man was an apparition.

Then, against the backdrop of glittering Lake Monona, see Monona Terrace up close, a summer home and retreat designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, who grew up in the state. As you gaze out over the lake, hear stories of the Lake Monona cryptid, Bozho, whose first encounter with unsuspecting canoers took place over 150 years ago.

As you move along the lakefront, see where the Old Madison jail stood, and hear tales of inmates being terrified by a spectre so alarming that they awoke the sheriff and begged for a different cell. Pass a nightclub, whose adjoining business was a funeral home, which left more than a few nightclub workers and band members some fights through the years and finally, your eery tour finishes at the Orpheum Theatre, which happens to be the final resting place for several Madison hauntings.

Your private spectral tour is two hours and just under two miles and is suitable for people of all ages, provided that adults are present with children.
