La Giralda is the iconic bell tower of the cathedral of Seville. It was initially constructed in 1195 as a minaret of the mosque which stood on the site at the time and was later repurposed into a bell tower for Seville's Cathedral following the Christian Reconquest of the city in the mid-13th century. The mosque was originally built in the 9th century during the Ummayad dynasty but as the Muslim population in the area grew, a larger structure was commissioned by the caliph Abu Ya'qub Yusuf in 1171. That version of the mosque was completed by 1176 but the minaret would take longer. Built using both local bricks and recycled marble from old Umayyad monuments, the tower was finally completed in 1198. Centuries later, once both the mosque and adjacent minaret were repurposed by the Catholic population of Seville after the expulsion of the Muslims from the area, a Renaissance-style belfry was added. However, the lower section of the tower still retains the Almohad design, with its intersecting arches and geometric designs being very typical of Islamic architecture.
La Giralda stands at a height of 341 feet (104 metres). This makes it one of the tallest structures in Seville and at the time of its completion, it was actually the tallest tower in the world. La Giralda gets its name from the term el giraldillo which refers to the bronze statue that stands on top of the tower and functions as a weather vane. To get the top of the tower, you need to ascend its 35 stone ramps. These ramps were designed in order to allow for people to go up on horseback! Of course the climb is definitely worth it for the stunning views over Seville. Along with the cathedral and royal Alcazar, la Giralda designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and receives hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
