Italica

Located just outside of Seville, Italica is one of the most important archaeological sites in Spain, founded by the Romans in 206 BCE

Italica was the first official Roman settlement in Spain. It was founded over 2000 years ago by a General named Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus to serve as a reward for his Italic veterans after the Second Punic War. Its strategic location near the Guadalquivir River made it an important hub for Roman expansion into the Iberian Peninsula. It flourished under Emperor Augustus and achieved prominence as the birthplace of two Roman emperors, Trajan and Hadrian. By the 2nd century CE, Itálica was a thriving Roman city with grand public buildings, luxurious homes, and advanced infrastructure. Eventually, Italica went into decline and was gradually forgotten until the Renaissance. From the 17th Century onwards, scholars and archaeologists began to recognise its significance and started to explore the ruins. Modern archaeologists are still working on extensive excavation and renovation of the site to this day and a significant portion of the ruins are accessible to visitors including the immense amphitheatre and remarkably well-preserved mosaics.
