The Manzanares el Real Castle is an impressive medieval fortress built in the 15th century in the town of the same name, around 50km from Madrid. Also known as the Castle of Los Mendoza, in relation to an influential noble family, it was commissioned back in 1475 by a duke called Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, a close advisor of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. The building is made of granite and showcases a mix of Gothic and early Renaissance architecture. It once served as a key defensive point for the Madrid region thanks to its strategic location at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range and has six distinctive towers, high battlements, a moat, and a drawbridge. Nowadays, it serves as a cultural monument and museum open to the public, hosting exhibitions and medieval reenactments.
