Around 60km from Madrid, the Guadarrama National Park covers an area of almost 34,000 hectares, making it the 5th largest in Spain. Named after the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range, key features of the park include rugged peaks such as Peñalara (the highest in the Madrid region), glacial lakes, expansive forests of Scots pine and oak, and meadows full of wildflowers. The park enjoys a rich biodiversity, hosting hundreds of species of wildlife including Spanish ibex, Imperial eagles, Griffon vultures, wolves and wild boar. The area is also steeped in history, with ancient castles, monasteries, and charming villages scattered throughout.
Guardarrama National Park is a popular destination for day-trippers from Madrid, with plenty of hiking trails, bike paths and even opportunities for skiing and snowboarding in the wintertime.
