Santa Barbara Garden

Santa Barbara Garden in Braga is located behind the medieval Archbishop’s Palace and features intricate boxwood hedges and colourful seasonal flower displays.

The Santa Barbara Garden (Jardim de Santa Bárbara) is one of Braga's most charming attractions, located in the heart of the historic centre. Set against the dramatic backdrop of 14th-century ruins, the garden is named after Saint Barbara, a Christian martyr, whose statue stands gracefully at the centre, surrounded by carefully manicured flower beds and geometric box hedges. It combines Gothic architecture and Renaissance landscaping and is meticulously maintained, with vibrant seasonal flower displays that change throughout the year.

The garden is situated next to the Archbishop's Palace (Antigo Paço Episcopal), a historic building now housing the university and municipal library, and the contrast between the medieval stone architecture and colourful garden creates a picturesque scene. The name likely derived from a small chapel dedicated to Santa Barbara nearby, reportedly built in the 17th century, but this no longer exists. The modern incarnation of the garden was created during a renovation project in the 1950s when the area was redesigned with the formal geometric patterns and boxwood hedges that characterize it today.
