Amarante

Amarante is a historic town in the Douro Valley, around 60km from Porto, known for its architecture, religious heritage, and excellent regional cuisine.

Nestled along the banks of the Tâmega River, Amarante is a picturesque town in northern Portugal. It is a popular destination for day trips from Porto. Amarante’s origins trace back to pre-Roman times, but it flourished in the 12th century, thanks to São Gonçalo, a Dominican monk and the patron saint of the town. His influence is still felt today, especially at the Church and Monastery of São Gonçalo, one of Amarante’s most iconic landmarks, built between the 16th and 18th centuries. The church is a mix of Manueline, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural styles, and contains intricate altarpieces, beautiful azulejo tiles and the tomb of Saint Gonçalo himself.

During the Napoleonic Wars (1809), Amarante played a crucial role in resisting French forces, earning a reputation for bravery. Of course, being part of the Douro wine region, it is also known for its cuisine and viticulture. The area is part of the Vinho Verde DOC, known for fresh, slightly effervescent white wines. The Loureiro and Avesso grape varieties thrive here, producing crisp and aromatic wines.
