Ponte Sisto

Ponte Sisto is a 15th-century pedestrian bridge in Rome, famed for its arches and central oculus. It connects the city center to Trastevere with scenic views.

Ponte Sisto is one of Rome’s most picturesque bridges, spanning the Tiber River and connecting the historic center with the lively Trastevere district. Built between 1473 and 1479 during the papacy of Pope Sixtus IV—after whom it is named—the bridge stands on the remains of an earlier Roman bridge, the Pons Aurelius, which was destroyed in the early Middle Ages.

Ponte Sisto's elegant design makes it unique, featuring four large arches and a distinctive central oculus, a circular opening that helps reduce pressure from the river’s currents. The bridge is pedestrian-only, making it a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike to enjoy scenic views of the river, St. Peter’s Basilica in the distance, and Rome’s charming cityscape.

Today, Ponte Sisto is a lively thoroughfare linking Campo de’ Fiori and Piazza Navona to Trastevere, a district known for its vibrant nightlife, traditional trattorias, and artisan shops. At sunset, the bridge becomes a romantic spot where street musicians often play, and couples stroll hand in hand.

The supernatural stroll continues to Largo di Torre Argentina, where the ruins mark the spot of Julius Caesar’s brutal assassination, a site steeped in betrayal and political murder. Finally, your journey ends at the Pantheon, one of Rome’s oldest and most mysterious sites. Some say the open oculus at its centre is a portal to the beyond, and its long history of burials has left more than just architectural grandeur behind.

As your tour comes to a close and your guide disappears into the night, paranormal activity is not guaranteed, but the enthralling accounts of ghostly goings-on will certainly leave a lasting impression as a highlight of your trip to the Eternal City.
