USS Arizona Memorial

Floating above the hull of the sunken battleship, the USS Arizona Memorial was built to commemorate those killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941

The USS Arizona Memorial forms part of the Pearl Harbor National Memorial commemorating the victims of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941. The memorial was built in 1962 and is only accessible by boat. It sits directly above the remainder of the submerged hull of the USS Arizona battleship which was hit by four armor-piercing bombs during the Japanese attack, claiming the lives of 1,177 people on board. The memorial was designed by Austrian-born Honolulu-based architect Alfred Preis and includes a shrine with a marble wall bearing the names of all those killed. The striking white structure is designed in the form of a bridge and takes care not to touch the ship itself.
