Washington Square was established in 1818 at the intersection of Meeting and Broad Streets. It was originally named City Square or Broad Street Square before being renamed in honour of George Washington in 1881. The park served as a gathering place during important moments in the city's history. Right in the centre of the park, there is a granite memorial dedicated to the Washington Light Infantry (a historic military unit) that is a miniature version of the Washington Monument.
Today, Washington Square remains a popular spot for both tourists and locals, offering a peaceful retreat in the bustling historic district. It is frequently used for wedding photos, as a meeting point for tours, and simply as a place to rest while exploring downtown Charleston.
