Inaugurated in 1947, Real Madrid's stadium is one of the most prestigious in the world. It is named in honour of the club's chairman Santiago Bernabéu Yeste, who was the club's president for 35 years between 1943 and 1978; he is often credited with the transformation of Real Madrid from the second most successful club in Madrid into the top club in Spain, and most successful in Europe.
The stadium is located in the central Chamartín district of Madrid, and is served by its own Santiago Bernabéu metro stop. Since it was first built it has seen a number of expansions and improvements, including a huge €127 million investment in the early 2000s overseen by club president Florentino Pérez, who added a new audio system and press area, heating to the stands, and new dressing rooms, boxes, VIP areas and bars.
Seating over 85,000, the stadium has been host four times to the European Cup final, as well as the UEFA Champions League final in 2010 and the final of the FIFA World Cup in 1982. Multiple tours operate when matches aren't on, offering visitors the chance to see behind the scenes in the club's dressing room, press room, trophy room, dugouts and tunnels, as well as enjoying a panoramic view of the stadium from on high, and seeing inside the presidential box. The 'Best Club in History' room is a museum of the club's achievements. There are also a number of stores from where you can buy personalised kit, souvenirs and more.
