St. John’s Archcathedral, or Archikatedra św. Jana, is one of Warsaw’s most important religious and historical landmarks. Tucked away just off Świętojańska Street in the heart of the Old Town, this towering Gothic church has witnessed the full sweep of Polish history—from royal coronations to wartime devastation.
Originally built in the 14th century, St. John’s served as the coronation and burial site of Mazovian dukes and later became the main cathedral for the Archdiocese of Warsaw. Its design reflects typical Masovian Gothic architecture, with soaring brick walls and pointed arches, though much of what you see today is a careful reconstruction.
During World War II, the cathedral was almost completely destroyed by German forces following the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. Its postwar rebuilding—based on 17th-century engravings rather than its later Baroque form—was part of the city’s larger effort to reclaim its identity and preserve its cultural heritage.
Inside, you’ll find a blend of historical and modern elements, including the tomb of the last king of Poland, Stanisław August Poniatowski, a striking 15th-century Gothic crucifix, and memorials to Polish national heroes. The cathedral’s quiet, reverent atmosphere offers a moment of reflection amid the bustling Old Town, and its story is a moving reminder of Warsaw’s resilience and spirit.

Warsaw has been called the “Phoenix City” because of its repeated history of rising from the devastation of invasions, wars, and tyrannical rulers. The worst of this occurred during WW2 when, after the Warsaw uprising against the Nazi German occupation, many of the city’s finest monuments were razed. However, the reconstruction work that has taken place since the war ensures that Warsaw is a city with some majestic landmarks and sights.
On your walking tour, your private guide will take you to some of the most important historical and cultural sites of this magnificent city, beginning with the castle, where you will have the chance to admire its spectacular architecture, paintings, and décor.
Then you’ll visit the Old Town in the heart of the city, and experience the striking mixture of architectural styles in one of the most beautiful squares in Warsaw.
Admire the impressive Royal Castle, a replica of the official residence of the Polish monarchs, the original being destroyed in WW2 by the Nazis. At the end of your tour, your guide will happily recommend the best places for you to dine and explore during the rest of your stay in Warsaw.
