What makes this tour special

Stroll amongst beautifully preserved historic buildings within York’s ancient encircling walls to discover a 2,000-year past and a vibrant, modern-day culture. On your private walking tour of York, you will:

First, the largest remaining part of York Castle, Clifford’s Tower - once a centre of Government and one of the city’s best-loved landmarks. A stroll down the hill takes you to The Shambles, one of the world’s best-preserved medieval streets as mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. From skinny 14th century alleyways and overhanging timber buildings, venture to the wide sweeping boulevard of Parliament Street, popular with jugglers and street artists. St Helen's Square is dominated by the grandeur of the Mansion House, the Lord Mayor’s official residence. Similarly resplendent, Guildhall is located beyond the Mansion house, and is an imposing first Grade I listed 15th pile situated on the River Ouse.

Next to Roman-era defensive structure Multangular Tower (209AD-211AD) before visiting magnificent York Minster, Northern Europe’s largest cathedral and an architectural masterpiece that emits a radiating glow over the city. Nearby, St Leonard’s Place is home to York Theatre Royal established in 1744 with York Garden Museum’s beautiful botanical gardens, where your guide will show you the former grounds of St Mary's Abbey. Your tour finishes with a drink at a local pub, where you can enjoy a pint or a glass of house wine, while your guide gives you the definitive local guide to York.

What you'll see

Clifford's Tower
The original tower was built after the Norman conquest of York in 1068 - a tumultuous history continued for centuries after.
Shambles
A fourteenth century street with overhanging eaves, some have traced the history back to the 1068 Domesday Book.
York Minster
Dedicated to Saint Peter, the cathedral of York dates back to the 15th century and is one of the largest of its kind in Northern Europe.
Parliament St
Enjoy a stroll down the quaint, shop-lined Parliament Street for a feel of the city of York from days gone by.
St Helen's Square
Named for St Helen's Church located in the square, the area has been a gathering place for locals for nearly three centuries.
York Guildhall
The guildhall began as a meeting house for guilds in the 15th century. It was bombed in a blitz during WWII and was reopened with a new stained glass window after the war.
Museum Gardens
Covering over 10 acres in the center of the city, the York Museum Gardens are well-maintained, sprawling botanical gardens.
