What makes this tour special
The National Gallery holds one of the greatest art collections in the world. Founded in 1824 and housed in monumental splendour at the north side of Trafalgar Square, this unique museum is jam-packed with some of art history’s greatest masterpieces.
Your tour begins in early modern Europe. You will encounter the work of artists such as Titian, whose sumptuous Bacchus and Ariadne depicts the god’s pursuit of the young maiden. Among others, you will also look at the art of the famed Tudor portraitist Hans Holbein the Younger, including his renowned work The Ambassadors.
Moving into the 1600s, the tour will visit some of the great art of this period, including Rembrant’sSelf Portrait at the Age of 34 and his striking Biblical work, Belshazzar’s Feast. Another great Biblical work is Salome Receives the Head of St John the Baptist, painted by the turbulent Caravaggio. So too will you see the multiple works by Reubens, the great diplomat artist, who placed the image of his young bride in The Judgement of Paris. On the theme of female beauty, you will learn the story of the rare Spanish nude, Velazquez’sRokeby Venus - and how long after the repressive milieu 17th century Spain, the piece found itself dragged into Britain’s Edwardian struggle for female suffrage.
Entering the Romantic era, you will see a valediction for the past - the Fighting Temeraire, taking its final voyage into the dusky seascape for which Turner is so well regarded. Walking further through these rooms, examine the evolution of impressionism and post-impressionism; gaze upon Monet’s Bathers at La Grenouillere and his similarly famed Water-Lily Pond, before coming toVan Gogh’s world-renowned Sunflowers, beloved of poster sellers the world over, and the smooth modern scenes of Seurat and his Bathers at Asnieres.
