During the Middle Ages, Kutna Hora silver mines received worldwide acclaim and the small city prospered, making it the second richest town in the Czech lands after Prague. The centre of the town still has the atmosphere of its golden era, where many Gothic buildings remain standing along idyllic, cobblestone streets.
While in Kutna Hora, you will have the chance to see several of the city’s most notable landmarks, including: the Cathedral of St Barbara, the Italian Court, and the Chapel of Sedlec, which hails from the 14th century.
The Chapel of the Sedlec overtakes the imagination of any curious visitor, with its unusual and long history. The chapel’s cemetery is home to many fallen soldiers from the Hussite wars. In 1511 a half-blind monk piled bones from abolished graves into pyramids. The bones were used to decorate the Bone Church. Master architect Jan Santini Blazej-Aichel renovated the space in his unique Baroque Gothic style before the Schwarzenbergs bought the ossuary in 1784. This noble family had the idea to place the 40,000 bones and skulls into obscure designs, including a large chandelier, a Gothic tower and a chalice. There are even bones depicting the Schwarzenberg coat-of- arms, which shows a severed Turk’s head and a raven. Any visit to the Bone Church is sure to be unforgettable and eerie, a memorable highlight of your stay in the Czech Republic.
Upon conclusion of the tour, you will be driven back to Prague and dropped off at your hotel.
