·        Look at the works of local artists at the Museo de Pintura Mural and the Taller Experimental de Gráfica
·        Enjoy the artistic diversity of pre-independence Cuba at the Museo de Arte Colonial
·        Appreciate the most comprehensive galleries in Cuba at the Palacio de Bellas Artes and the Centro Asturiano

Cuba’s artistic make-up reflects the numerous demographic influences which have shaped it since Columbus landed over five centuries ago. With something for everyone – from street art to classic colonial pieces – Havana is a treasure trove for people looking to gain a greater appreciation of the island’s artistic culture.

Present and Past Wealth

A short walk will take you to the Museo de Pintura Mural. Here you can gaze at the restored frescoes in one of the city’s oldest houses before moving to the next stage of your journey: the Taller Experimental de Gráfica. This printers’ workshop is a great opportunity to see artists at work. If you wish, there is the chance to buy some of their work from the adjacent Galería del Grabado.

Cuba’s Treasures

Entering the Museo de Arte Colonial, your guide will show you around the 12 rooms which make up this museum devoted to the lives of Havana’s different classes during the 18th and 19th century. They will also take you to both sites of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. The first, the Palacio de Bellas Artes, has a large permanent collection utterly devoted to Cuban art. Keep an eye out for René Portocarrero’s La Habana en Rojo and Wifredo Lam’s La Silla. A short walk will take you to its counterpart: the Centro Asturiano. This is focused on international, albeit mostly European, art and includes a fine collection of Greek vases as well as Hans Memling’s Virgin and Child.
